Residential Training
St Michael's College trains people for ordained Christian ministry from the Church in Wales, the Church of England and the Methodist Church. The College has a number of distinctive features:
We are a non-party College
We are the only Theological College for the Church in Wales, and have a long tradition of welcoming ordinands from the Church of England and student ministers from the Methodist Church to train at St Michael's. As such we welcome students from a wide range of Church traditions who come together to prepare for mission and ministry.
We are a College that engages with the needs of the Church
The close relationship with the Church in Wales means that training is rooted in the life of the Church and its needs.
We provide an ecumenical context for ministerial formation
As well as being an Anglican and Methodist College, we work closely with the South Wales Baptist College, so there is a strong ecumenical dimension to the training at St Michael's.
Our theological education takes place in a University context
Our distinctive relationship with Cardiff University means that this is where our students study. As a vibrant and dynamic institution, the University provides a context in which theology cannot be removed from the challenges and opportunities facing the Church in the 21st Century.
We have particular expertise in the field of Chaplaincy studies
The Centre for Chaplaincy Studies has a growing reputation, both nationally and internationally. This means that those interested in Chaplaincy ministry in future can benefit from the resources of this Centre and follow a training pathway which will provide a good grounding for such ministry in the future.
Training at St Michael's
Formation for ministry at St Michael's has three main components each of which is detailed in the pages that follow:
Theological Education in Cardiff University
A variety of Cardiff University courses provide the academic component of training.
Practical training
Placements and the Core Skills for Ministry Programme provide the practical experience and training that is essential in any preparation for Christian ministry.
A worshipping community of ministerial formation
At the heart of the formational experience is participation in the life of a worshipping community of women and men who are preparing for Christian ministry.
The Ministerial Formation Portfolio which all students work on with their personal tutor during their time in College draws together the different strands of formation.
