Cardiff University LogoStudying in the University

All our ordination courses are Cardiff University courses. Details of the different options are found on the Academic Courses page. Let us explain the relationship between the College and the University and the significance of that relationship.

  • A three-way partnership between Colleges and University.

St Michael's College, the South Wales Baptist College and the School of Religious and Theological Studies of Cardiff University together make up the Faculty of Religious and Theological Studies of Cardiff University. Tutors from the colleges teach in the University and this is where college students have their lectures. Some of these lectures are just with other college students; some are alongside other undergraduates. This means that our students do not simply embark upon courses underwritten by the University, rather, they actually study at the University Campus and are thus directly immersed in a learning environment which offers the best of university teaching, library facilities, and IT access which complement the facilities at the college.

  • The significance of this partnership in formation for ministry.

This ecumenical and University context has a wider formational significance. Like all good theology, learning at St Michael's does not take place in a cosseted vacuum but rather in the vibrant environment of a modern University setting where theology finds equal place alongside other disciplines in the arts and sciences.

With the opportunity to do some of their learning alongside students of different religious convictions or none, our students are resourced to approach theology as an exercise in meaningful dialogue and are thereby equipped to offer an approach to the Christian faith which is both robust and pertinent to a society that needs to be convinced as to the significance of faith and spirituality.
