Joining the Course

The St Michael's non-residential course is designed to serve the ordained and reader training needs of the Church in Wales and the Methodist Church in Wales. We provide training for those who will continue to manage full-time work or other commitments which rule-out full-time theological study.

If you are interested in ordained ministry in the Church in Wales, you should first speak with your local parish priest, who may then put you in touch with your Diocesan Director of Ordinands (DDO). Dioceses have their own selection procedures, which then lead into attending a Provincial Selection Board. If you are recommended for training by the Board, you will then begin attending the non-residential Course at the following Summer School which marks the start of our academic year. Your course of training will normally take three years. Those interested in the ordained ministry of the Methodist Church should speak initially to their Superintendent minister.

If you are interested in becoming a reader, you should first speak with your local parish priest, who may then put you in touch with your diocese's Warden of Readers. Dioceses each have their own selection procedures. If you are recommended to train as a reader, your Warden of Readers will contact St Michael's and you will begin attending the non-residential Course at the following Summer School which marks the start of our academic year. Your course of training will normally take two years.

A month or so before the Summer School we will be in contact with you to take personal details. We will also send you our Student Handbook, which gives you enough initial information about the course for you to make preparations to start your training.

Important: if you anticipate starting the course in the forthcoming year, please check the Non-Residential Course Dates section of this website. This provides the dates of the forthcoming teaching for which you must be available. Absences can only be permitted on health and compassionate grounds, so it is important to arrange your diary early enough to be available to attend when the teaching is taking place.
