Vocations Strategy14th April 2010

The college is working with the Church in Wales on a vocations strategy to increase the numbers coming forward for selection. For some time now the college has been running a course for those enquiring about vocations called Who me, lord?; this has now been developed into a full strategy for the Church in Wales led by the Bishop of St Asaph, Gregory Cameron. The strategy has been written by Paul Roberts, Dean of Non-Residential Training, and he presented it with Bishop Gregory to the Governing Body of the Church in Wales at the University of Wales, Lampeter on 14th April. There was a lively debate on the issue, and the strategy was warmly received. The strapline is DYMA FI. ANFON FI which in English means HERE I AM. SEND ME. The aim of the strategy is to ‘generate a sense of excitement about the call to Christian ministry’. (Click here to read the Church in Wales press release.)

The strategy was also picked up well in the media; Matthew Trick, a former St Michael's student who is now a curate in Port Talbot, appeared on BBC TV on the morning of April 14. He was interviewed the same morning with the Principal, Peter Sedgwick, on Good Morning Wales (BBC Radio Wales) where he described being a curate as a great job, with endless variety. The strategy was also covered by the Western Mail on Tuesday 13th April where Bishop Gregory said “I very much believe this is an opportunity – not a problem… What we have got the opportunity to do is recruit a new generation of leaders of the Church – and specifically target younger people and bring their new vision into the life of the Church.” (Click here to read the Western Mail article.)

Paul Roberts will be working with Bishop Gregory as secretary to the vocations working party over the next three years. Click here to read DYMA FI. ANFON FI.
