Further Study

At different stages in our careers, many of us feel drawn to explore our theology further. This may mean signing up for a short course studying for a further degree, undertaking research on a specific theme or engaging in a period of reflection, possibly as part of a sabbatical. St Michael's welcomes anyone wishing to broaden their mind or extend their mission and ministry in this way and offers a range of options for you to consider.

Short courses are one-off experiences looking at an individual area of interest. They usually take place over one or two weekends and are open to anyone with an interest in the topic. If you want to broaden your knowledge but don’t want to undertake a full university programme then one of these may be for you.

Sabbaticals are a recognised way to re-energise people, by allowing them time to explore a different aspect of their work or to undertake some form of study. St Michael's offers the opportunity for anyone taking a sabbatical to participate for a few weeks in the life of the college - to talk to the students, to gain new ideas about worship and experience new ways to engage with people, to step back from a busy life, to catch up and to reflect.

For those looking for a more formal period of study, St Michael's, in partnership with Cardiff University's Faculty of Religious and Theological Studies, offers full-time and part-time study. The two routes offered are either through a structured course of teaching leading to the awards of MA, MTh or Postgraduate Diploma or by undertaking supervised research leading to the awards of MPhil and PhD. Research interests include:

  • The Church in contemporary society;
  • Christian social ethics;
  • The nature of worship; and
  • Modern Theology.
  • Chaplaincy Studies

Students can combine their formal study with life at St Michael's – taking advantage of the accommodation, study, support and worship available in this tranquil setting.

Accommodation is also available to those undertaking a sabbatical or reflective break.
