Why choose St Michael's

St Michael's invites you to open your mind to mission and ministry.

In the wider context of inter-faith and ecumenical dialogue, St Michael's embraces the diversity of Anglican traditions and the spiritual vibrancy this generates leading to a unique and personal learning experience.

Students who are most attracted to St Michael's are those who want to discover, debate and develop as they explore their vocation and begin their personal journey, and are looking for:

A firm grounding in practical theology

Through high quality teaching and partnership with local churches. St Michael's is recognized as an impressive institution which is leading the way in meeting the challenges of ministry in the 21st Century.

We enjoy a unique relationship with Cardiff University – those who train for ministry here receive a University qualification and this can be augmented throughout your years of ministry through further accredited work at any university institution.

Partnership with local churches

We have a close relationship with the Anglican and Methodist churches and placements range from pioneer ministry, chaplaincy in many different institutions, to parish ministry. We use local clergy extensively in training, providing a hands-on preparation for ministry.

Diversity and richness of dialogue

St Michael's welcomes students from all walks of life to train at all levels and all stages of ministry, both Anglican and Methodist, Church in Wales and Church of England. Students come from different church traditions and the variety of worship is vibrant and exciting.

Something a little different

St Michael's is an attractive place to train for anyone who would value the opportunity to step a little outside a context they know well to experience something and somewhere a little different. We encourage debate and our students expect to be stretched in every way. We provide nurture and support throughout training, and students see us as a springboard to future ministry.

Chaplaincy and Ministry development

We offer an expanding programme of in-service training and ministry development and have an extensive research portfolio. We are also home to the Centre for Chaplaincy Studies, which caters for chaplains in prisons, hospitals, schools and the military. The Centre has been highly praised and adds to the rich variety of life at St Michael's.

  • Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan said
"Clergy who train in Wales can be confident they are receiving one of the best preparations for their vocation. St Michael's College is developing apace and stands comparison with any other theological college in Britain, rightly attracting students from other provinces."
  • Suffragan Bishop of Dover, The Rt Revd Trevor Willmott said,
"At a time when ministry formation and training is much under scrutiny St Michael's Llandaff offers a fine example of what we hope for in any training institution within the Communion. I am delighted to commend St Michaels to this Church of England."
